Mission Statement
Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester (LVGW) aims to partner with you to build a more literate community.
What we are about
Established in 1973, LVGW is a community non profit supported by over 100 trained volunteers who provide confidential, free, individualized, year-round tutoring in either basic reading or English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). In 2005 LVGW added a Literacy Academy with a faculty of certified ESL and reading teachers who work with clients in small classes to meet the overwhelming need for literacy instruction.
Performance
Last year we offered over 350 seats of instruction and tutoring opportunities to 100 individuals. Our clients goals are often to read to their children, find a job, find a better job, get a drivers license, and become citizens, or to make better health decisions, go back to school, and upgrade certifications from their home country. LVGW provides the literacy opportunities needed to change lives.
Did You Know
Immigrants are the driving force behind the economic future growth of the state of Massachusetts. According to Northeastern Universitys Center for Labor Market studies, 100% of the growth in the Massachusetts workforce over the past decade has come from immigrant labor. Worcester reflects the state wide situation given the high percentage of immigrants living in our city. The 2000 to 2005 US Census Bureau estimates that Worcester is the fastest-growing community with 11,783 foreign born new residents.
Only through attaining English language literacy in spoken and written word can our newest neighbors become independent contributing members of our society. With our instructional programs new residents work towards:
- Understanding English
- Being Understood in English
- Successfully communicating in English
- You can join us to help someone realize their attainable dreams. See Volunteer
